Judith Burger-Gossart to Speak at MADA Annual Meeting
Oct 11-28, 2015
The Maine Antiques Dealer's Association (MADA) is proud to announce that Judith Burger-Gossart will speak at our Annual Meeting on October 28, 2015 at the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport.
Judith Burger-Gossart's book, Sadie's Winter Dream: Fishermen's Wives and Maine Sea Coast Mission Hooked Rugs, 1923-1938, was a natural outgrowth of her interest in hooked rugs. The women she encountered in her research were compelling. The more she learned about them, the more she realized that these amazing and courageous women had a timeless story to tell.
Her book has been published after seven years of writing and research.
Burger-Gossart graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1965, majoring in American Studies. She received a masters degree in history from Columbia University Teachers College and a masters degree from the University of
Connecticut School of Social Work. She was a social worker for twenty-five years. Upon moving to Maine in 1996, she ventured into an uncharted territory: becoming an antique dealer and starting Sprucewind Antiques.
Her antique business centered on textiles. She curated exhibits, with the focus on hooked rugs and textiles. Two exhibits at the Mount Desert Island Historical Society included illustrated catalogues: Three Centuries of Hooking and Folk Art from Mount Desert Island Collections. She has given numerous talks on hooked rugs, and written articles on Maine Sea Coast Mission hooked rugs for The Magazine Antiques, Rug Hooking Magazine, and Chebacco: The Magazine of the Mount Desert Island Historical Society. She has designed and made hooked rugs all her life.
The MADA Board is happy to invite you to attend our Annual Meeting which is going to take place on Wednesday, October 28th at The Harrasseeket Inn, 162 Main Street, in Freeport. MADA had the Annual Meeting there several years ago and it was very enjoyable.
The day will start at 11:30 for a social hour to be followed by a buffet luncheon at 12:30. This is a nice opportunity to get together and review the last year and look towards the future.
You may recall that last year we invited non members to attend our luncheon and enjoy the Rufus Porter presentation. We would like to extend the same invitation to non-MADA members this year who would like to attend Judith's talk and join us for lunch. So please feel free to make anyone you think might be interested, aware of Judith's presentation and invite them along.
Following Judith's presentation we will have our Annual Meeting.
The price of the buffet luncheon for members and non-members is $20 per person. I really do hope you will be able to attend as the presentation will be very informative, the company welcoming, and the luncheon delicious!
Please send me an email at
edesimone@goosefareantiques.com so that I can keep a count of attendees and then please send a check made out to MADA to PO Box 510, Brunswick ME 04011-0501
Thank you,
