There will be a cash bar before the lunch and after the speaker we will have our annual meeting and the election of officers.

President’s letter

A lot has happened in our MADA world and months have flown by since our Spring Sampler publication.

I am very pleased to report that our Membership status is very strong with over 280 members since the announcement of our new "antique show" “Antique's in the Gardens" partnering with the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.   In the last year, MADA has certainly taken a major turn upward as far as awareness for our dealers.  Our dues membership officially closed December 31st, 2007 and since then, our membership has grown.

We have had 2 successful shows this year with strong advertising on all fronts.  Our July summer show at the Botanical Gardens is a wonderful success story.  I would like to thank Deb Schaeffer for taking on the role as our Show Manager and what a great job she did.  Deb worked with both organizations and coordinated all aspects producing a beautiful show with 44 dealers on the grounds of the Maine Botanical Gardens with Martha Stewart as our guest and Honorary Chair.  In addition, I want to thank our Kim Washam for the exemplary role that she played in driving our advertising campaign for this show.  We had strong press both prior and on site covering our show and it continues as we have been a spotlight and in the eyes of many organizations.  I am pleased to report that we have set a date for next years Botanical Show for July 23, 24 and 25.  Communication will be forthcoming as we start the planning of 2009 show. A special thanks goes to Marion Redlon for producing a beautiful Program/Show Catalog that again produced a profit for our show.   I can go on and on and say thank you to many people, especially our Board members for the amount of time that went into producing this show and Polly Thibodeau, Shirley Ussery & Sue Hopkins for their assistance in logistics during the show.

Our August Coastal Show, (formerly Roundtop) continues to “reign” as a popular summer event.  Another sunny and unbeatable day, with 120 of our MADA dealers exhibiting.  This year’s show was managed by Colleen Donovan , and she did a fantastic job working with our dealers and the Damariscotta River Association to produce an excellent show. Our attendance was over 1200 people with items large and small purchased during the course of the day.  Special thanks to John Kinloch & Bill Ussery & Bill Garland, Roger Williams, Pat Reed & Joe Bent for all their help in assisting Colleen with logistics, & thank you George Betke for your “parking wisdom”.   The Damariscotta River Association was very pleased with the outcome of the day and has welcomed us back for years to come.  We have set the date of August 26th, for our 2009 Coastal Show.

A special thanks goes to Pat Reed .  Pat has been collecting and publishing our MADA news each month.   Please keep Pat up-to-date and in the know so she can publish a well versed column for all of us… patreedantiques@earthlink.net   Even though Pat is a snow bird, she stays glued to the news.

MADA has awarded a $1,000 grant to The Brooks Maine Historical Society, Brooks , ME   for continuing their education programs.  Our endowment fund is continuing to grow and we would like to see requests from organizations that would like our assistance.   If you know of an organization or would like more info, please contact, Roger Williams, themaineboathouse@verizon.net.

Our Annual Meeting is set for Wednesday, October 8th at the Harraseeket Inn, Freeport , ME.   Our guest speaker, Charlie Burden is well known in the industry for his passion for Folk Art & Marine Antiques and was one of the major players in producing the Maine Folk Art Trail.

You are cordially invited to attend an OpeningReception on November 1st at the Maritime Museum from 5:00-8:00p.m. to benefit artisans of ASMA.  MADA will host a few tables of wares to be sold and a portion of the sales will go benefit the Museum.  If you would like to be part of this free-admission event, please contact me for further information.  bevYreynolds@gmail.com, 443-8812.

Also in November, before the snow birds go south, we will host an education seminar for the benefit of our members.  As we all know, the antique industry has changed dramatically and many of our dealers are having a hard time maintaining their business.

Dave Krashes, a retired CEO of the MMR Group and avid antique collector, formed a task force with many of our trade of auctioneers, publishers, show managers and dealers to come up with an idea of helping antique dealers stay alive.  The focus is to promote the fun of collecting, making antiques affordable and the idea of finding new collectors for our antiques trade.  With the input from the task force, Dave produced a brochure and is providing educational seminars throughout the New England area.  Stay tuned for the date, time and location of this seminar….

I hope to see many of you at our Annual Meeting on October 8th.  I truly welcome feedback and support from all of you as we move ahead in planning for 2009 and beyond.

Happy Fall

Sincerely,

Bev Reynolds
